What is the Campus Ecology Club at Fort Lewis College?
In 1998, the Students For Sustainable Design Club became the Campus Ecology Club to build awareness of the Campus Ecology mission. The purpose of the Campus Ecology club is to promote ecological sustainability and environmental awareness on our campus and in the surrounding community.
The Campus Ecology initiative at Fort Lewis College has taken great strides over the past few years. There is currently one student coordinator of Campus Ecology, numerous volunteers, and one faculty representative. Dean Mullen is currently our Campus Ecology coordinator, and Kalin Grigg is our faculty advisor.
Ongoing projects include campus landscaping conversion from non-native water intensive varieties to native species. We are continually developing our demonstration garden. Within the garden we employ Permaculture design strategies, drip irrigation techniques, native dry-land species, medicinal plants and we hope to have nationally accredited organic certification. We have an active voice to the President of Fort Lewis College through the President's Advisory Council on Environmental Affairs. Currently, we are working to compile a computer technologies impact statement so that we can thoroughly address energy use and recycling on campus.
We would love to have as many people involved with campus ecology as possible! Join our mailing list and we will update you monthly on club meeting times, upcoming events and environmental activities around the four corners. Please stop by the Environmental Center or contact us and let us know what you are interested in, how you can help, or what projects you're interested in pursuing. You may contact Jackie Kuusinen jmkuusinen@fortlewis.edu or call the Environmental Center at (970) 247-7676.
